Past Events: Flying Fish’n’Chip Supper

17th September 2009

A full house gathered on the 17th September at the Lilliput Sailing Club, anticipating another memorable evening of PFBC celebration, and those assembled were richly rewarded by a superb event.

We were again greeted by a tranquil scene over Blue Lagoon which was viewed by arrivees looking out from the balcony...

A feast of fish’n’chips, followed by mouth-watering desserts beautifully & painstakingly prepared by Barbara Cobb for us, gave an opportunity to meet & to socialise with new Friends.

Amongst these was Pam Stickland (nee Pym) who joined IAL staff in their offices at the Pottery building as a telex operator, and Judith Dutch one of the daughters of Capt. Lewis Carey (who penned the first history of the Flying Boats at Poole).

Next it was the turn for Colin Pomeroy to take centre stage: Colin delivered an entertaining and well-honed presentation which encompassed photographs to illustrate Dorset airfields at Chickerell, Lodmoor & RAF Warmwell, and their aircraft.

These were expertly interwoven with histories of other sites associated with the Weymouth area, e.g. Portland and The Fleet!

He skilfully related much to a wider picture including Poole - and our Flying Boats of IAL/ BOAC and the RAAF/ RAF...

Also, tempting with ref. to his ‘The Flying Boats of Bermuda’, which alongside ‘Wings over Weymouth’ is one of the dozen titles he has successfully completed - with more to follow soon.

Then he gave fascinating insight into his 20 years in the RAF, especially on 203 Sqn as Squadron Leader at RAF Luqa, Malta and his time in the Med. during 1969-77 ’midst the Cold War.
