Past Events: Flying Boats of Bermuda Transatlantic Celebration

25th March 2010

Another superb Flying Fish’n’Chip Supper was held courtesy of Lilliput Sailing Club, with Colin Stewart running the bar!

Sixty five of us celebrated whilst enjoying Colin Pomeroy’s presentaton on the Flying Boats of Bermuda which encompassed the history of  IAL / BOAC operations using Bermuda as a vital staging post as well as the significant role of Bermuda for the FAA + RAF, also important connections with US aviation and their forces.

Of particular poignancy was the story of G-ADUU Cavalier, which was shipped out to Bermuda for IAL pre-war, but was lost in 1938: yet 10 of 13 on board were miraculously saved by Esso Baytown at night through the plotting of Capt. Taffy Powell in Bermuda who estimated the position of the rescue.

On the same occasion, just before Colin Pomeroy’s talk, Jeremy Waters on behalf of Edward (Ted) Walkey, presented to Commodore Ken for PFBC, a very special painting of Poole! For further details of the painting and presentation, please click here
